Imagine being transported upward 1,000 feet, in 20 feet of snow, to the top of a mountain. A cozy snow cat hauls 16 guests at a time, including David and myself.
Upon arrival at Silcox Hut, 1,000 feet above Timberline Lodge of Mount Hood, we all step out of the cat into the freezing snowfall, to a breathtaking view of the several surrounding peaks.
Then, imagine warming yourself by escaping the cold into a stone hut with one long festive table set for a feast. A roaring fire on one end of the room and welcoming appetizers on the other are perfectly placed next to a chilled glass of our 2014 DuBrul Vineyard Riesling. Imagine spending the evening tasting the magical talents of winemakers and chefs among cheerful conversation while the silent and beautiful snow storm threatens the outdoors.
On the evening of March 15, David and I shared this unique experience with about 30 guests from both Oregon and Washington. Chef Jason Stoller Smith successfully paired 7 Owen Roe wines with a 7-course meal, highlighting our 2015 Chapel Block Syrah, Red Willow Vineyard with a delightful lamb course, ending with our 2015 "The Parting Glass" Late Harvest Riesling. Other Owen Roe wines served included our 2015 Dubrul Vineyard Chardonnay, 2014 Sojourner Vineyard Pommard Clone Pinot Noir, 2015 Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir, 2016 Sinister Hand and the 2012 DuBrul Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.
